Abdullah Hussain (14 August 1931 – 4 July 2015) was one of the most celebrated and influential Urdu novelists, short story writers, and a powerful literary voice from Gujrat, Pakistan. He is best known for his timeless masterpiece Udaas Naslain, which won the prestigious Adamjee Literary Award in 1963 and became a landmark in modern Urdu literature.
Early Life:
His family migrated from Bannu to Punjab. His father worked as an excise inspector and later became a farmer.
Abdullah Hussain was the youngest of four siblings and lost his mother when he was only six months old.
His father was extremely protective of him, a bond that often reflects deeply in his writings.
Rise to Fame:
Hussain rose to prominence with Udaas Naslain اُداس نسلیں, a novel exploring the tragedy of colonial rule, class conflict,
war, and human suffering during the partition era. Considered one of the finest post-Partition novels, it
has remained continuously in print for over 40 editions and continues to touch generations of readers.
Major Works:
Udaas Naslain • Nadaar Log • Baagh • Qaid • Raat • Wapasi Ka Safar • Nashaib • Faraib
His novelette “Raat” was also translated into Persian by Samira Gilani. His short story “The Return Journey”
was adapted into a BBC feature film titled Brothers in Trouble.
Literary Themes:
His works explore human psychology, social injustice, class struggle, war, identity crisis,
and the sorrowful realities of life — a recurring tone throughout his writing.
Controversies:
After the publication of Udaas Naslain, he faced criticism for alleged similarities with Qurratulain Hyder’s
Aag Ka Darya. Despite criticism, Hussain maintained that no comprehensive critical study of his novel had been done.
He famously requested critics not to review Nadaar Log for six months after its release so that ordinary readers
could judge it freely.
Death:
He passed away on 4 July 2015 after battling blood cancer, leaving behind a literary legacy that continues
to shape Urdu literature. His death highlighted the growing distance between Urdu and English readerships in Pakistan.
Yet his works remain alive, powerful, and unforgettable.
