These emotional experiences strengthened her voice as a champion of women's issues within a conservative society. Her tragic death in a car accident in Islamabad in 1994 shocked the literary world; she was only 42. Today, a major road in Islamabad is named after her.

Parveen Shakir wrote skilfully in forms such as ghazal and āzād nazm (free verse), beautifully blending classical tradition with modern expression. She was a pioneer in using the feminine first-person pronoun in Urdu poetry—an act that revolutionized contemporary literature.

Her major works include Khushbu (1976), Sad-barg (1980), Khud-kalaami (1990), Inkaar (1990), Mah-e-Tamām (1994), and the posthumous masterpiece Kaf-e-Aina. For her literary excellence, she received the Adamjee Literary Award in 1976 and Pakistan’s prestigious Pride of Performance in 1990.
