Bushra Rehman (29 August 1944 – 7 February 2022) was a highly acclaimed Pakistani novelist, author, columnist, and politician. She is remembered as one of the most influential female voices of Urdu literature, celebrated for her emotional depth and powerful storytelling.
Early Life and Education:
Born in Bahawalpur, British India, Bushra Rehman started writing at a very young age.
She published her first short story at just 12 years old in a children's magazine.
Growing up in a literary household nurtured her love for reading and writing.
She earned her Master’s degree in Journalism from the University of the Punjab.
She later married Mian Abdul Rehman, an industrialist from Lahore.
Literary Career:
Bushra Rehman authored more than 25 books including novels, travelogues, short stories,
and newspaper columns. Her writings focus deeply on the struggles of women in a
patriarchal society—highlighting themes of love, pain, sacrifice, and emotional strength.
Her work is known for protesting social injustices and shedding light on women’s rights.
Several of her novels were dramatized by PTV, including the widely popular Payasi and Lagan.

Political Career:
Bushra Rehman also had a remarkable political journey. She served as a member of the
Provincial Assembly of Punjab (1985–1990) on a reserved seat for women.
Later, she became a member of the National Assembly of Pakistan (2002–2013).
In 1990, the Punjab Assembly unanimously passed a resolution honoring her with the title "Master of Expression" in recognition of her literary excellence.
Awards and Death:
In 2007, she was awarded the prestigious Sitara-i-Imtiaz (Star of Excellence) by the Government of Pakistan
for her outstanding contribution to Urdu literature.
She passed away on February 7, 2022 in Lahore at the age of 77 sufering from corona virus.
